Students near driving age, and their parents, have many questions concerning the licensing procedure. We are here to help answer some of those questions and get you started in the process.
AGE: Students may register and take the classroom if they are soon to be 15 years old or older. Students must be 15 years old
or older to take the State Driving Permit Test and may schedule Behind-the-Wheel instructions only if they possess an
instruction permit (obtained after the classroom).
CLASSROOM: During the school year, after school and evening classes are offered. Most night classes are held from 6:00 to
9:00 p.m. for 10 class periods. After school classes are held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., for the 30-hour classroom requirement.
DRIVERS PERMIT: Obtaining the permit at an early 15 years of age is wise. This allows the student to utilize the permit by
practicing for approximately one year before driving on their own. The State of Minnesota requires a student to have their permit
for a minimum of 6 months before they may apply for a driver’s license. During this practice period the student is required to
log 50 practice hours of Behind-the-Wheel driving with a licensed driver 21 years old or older.
BEHIND-THE-WHEEL: The six (6) hours of Behind-the-Wheel is scheduled after the classroom requirement is satisfied. Students can be picked up at most any location in the city limits. We use state certified dual-brake vehicles.
FARM PERMIT: Students interested in early licensing of the farm restricted license qualify if their guardians possess farm land
used as their primary income and have a need for their driving in connection with the farm.
